Reading Schools Sport Partnership Girls 7a side Football Finals at the Madejski Sports Dome

Wednesday 2nd December 2009  - Mr  Weatherstone

Battle Primary Year 5 and 6 Girls football team were pleased to accept a bye through to the Reading Schools Sport Partnership Girls 7 a side Football Finals at the Madejski Sports Dome, after other local schools could not field a team to play Battle Primary. This was not ideal preparation for the finals as it did not give the girls much time to practice before the tournament.

The tournament was played in exactly the same way as the boys finals, it was played in a league format with the School who managed to achieve the most points at the end of the day being put forward to play in the County finals which would are being played on Saturday 16th January 2010.

The following Children were selected to play: Takana, Lenka, Lisa, Eva Asante, Maria and Aliyah Azam from year 6 and Annabelle in year 5. This was the first time the girls had ever played in football a match together and was the first time many of them had even played in a football match, so this was a fantastic opportunity for all the girls to show off there skills.

With every school in Reading area invited to play in this tournament the girls were lucky to receive a bye to play in the Finals and be part of the final 6 school teams. The girls played five games during the tournament and did fantastic to finish joint first but runners up over all. The team did not lose a game all afternoon, drawing two games and winning 3. The team scored 3 goals and conceded none, which is an outstanding defensive performance. The girls should feel very proud of the record during the tournament and finished joint top with St John’s Primary School on 11 points. Battle were judged to finish second over all as St John’s Primary School scored 5 goals to our 3, which show’s how close the girls came to winning the tournament. To achieve such success for a team that has never played together is a great achievement for every child that took part. Each girl should feel very proud with there all round performance and the way they represented the school.

During the competition, Battle started against last years champions Church End Primary and did very well to draw the game 0-0. In the second game saw the team play against St John’s who finally won the tournament and drew 0-0, which over all was a fine start to the tournament. By this time you could see the Girls were getting better and better with each game and started growing as a team, with this they went on to win the next three matches, beating St Anne’s Primary School 1-0, Emmer Green Primary School 1-0 and Chesfield Juniors? (I did not get details of this school think that was right) 1-0. Lauren scored all the goals in each match, however each girl played there part in the team doing so well.

It was also very pleasing to get more compliments from the organisers from the Reading Schools Sport Partnership who said “Battle girl’s behaviour matched the way they played during the afternoon, professional, fair and lots of smiles”. This was very pleasing that the organisers of the tournament saw the girls enjoying themselves but competing in the right way at the same time.

Well done Girls!

Reading Schools Sport Partnership Boys 7a side Football Finals at the Madejski Sports Dome

Tuesday 24th November 2009

Battle Primary was proud to of qualified for the Reading Schools Sport Partnership Boys 7a side Football Finals at the Madejski Sports Dome after beating Coley Park Primary 6-2. Qualifying for the finals meant the school had to play 6 matches against other Primary Schools in the Reading area that had also qualified, each game lasting 8 minutes. The tournament was played in a league format with the School who managed to achieve the most points at the end of the day being put forward to play in the County finals which would are being played on Saturday 16th January 2010.

The following Children were selected to play: Kane , Taylor , Levi , Hizar , Pedro , Ben , Dillon , Luke , Lewis  and Aimen. It was also very pleasing that a member of the Reading Schools Sport Partnership said “how well behaved the children were and the School should be honoured to have such nice kids”. Each child should feel proud about how they represented the School and themselves.

There were 36 primary schools in the Reading area that took part in this competition, which Battle Primary School finished 4th over all, winning two games, drawing four and losing one game. The team also scored 11 goals and only conceded 5, keeping 2 clean sheets along the way (this includes the Coley Park Primary result). On the actual day Kane Heholt scored four goals and Taylor Sullivan scored one. To achieve so much for a team that has only just been put together is a fantastic achievement for every child that took part.

During the competition, Battle got off to a slow start and lost the first match 1-0 to Christ the King Primary, this was the worst it would get for the rest of the day as Battle did not lose a match after this; they drew there next two matches to Caversham Primary 1-1 and Whitley Primary 0-0. By this time the boys seemed to have warmed to the tournament and raced in to the next match against St John’s Primary and won the game comfortably 3-1 which was a fantastic effort. During the next match they faced the eventual winners of the competition Church End Primary and drew the game 1-1 which proves how well everyone had done because there was not any difference between the 2 teams apart from the slow start to the tournament. In the last match Battle played against St Mary’s Primary School and drew 0-0.

Over all, everyone who represented the school should feel very satisfied with the all round performance.
